Think you’re having a bad day???

A Book Review by Dr Tom Palfi

Next time you think you are having a bad day, I suggest you read a few pages of Barbara’s book – hopefully you will soon realize that your day is not anywhere as bad as it could be.

Barbara’s battle with cancer and severe rheumatoid arthritis is truly remarkable – not so much for the fact that she survived, but that she was able to keep such an accurate and vivid record of her day-to-day struggles during such a challenging time.

The main messages I have taken from the book and tried to translate to my own life are as follows:

1. Learn to appreciate and be grateful for the simple things in life that we so often take for granted e.g. having all our limbs and faculties and senses in good working order.

2. Live every day as if it is your last ……because one day it will be.

3. With regards to staying healthy, forget the fancy (often fad) stuff and stick to the basics – eat organic minimally-processed ‘real ‘food (i.e. food that exists in nature); drink clean water; get regular sunshine, fresh air & exercise (an even mix of aerobic, anaerobic, strength, core & mobility/flexibility/balance training) and take some high-quality nutritional supplements as an insurance policy (e.g. CoQ, Omega-3 fish oils and a multi-mineral/vitamin/anti-oxidant).

4. The only difference between being stuck in a rut or a grave is the depth of the hole – find something you are passionate about, set some goals and go for it!

5. Have a rich support network of friends and family.

6. Laugh often and loud.

Thank you Barbara for sharing your personal, precious and painful journey with us – you truly are an IRONWOMAN,
Dr Tom Palfi
