Allan & Jan’s new cowshed

Allan & Jan's new cowshed - almost finished

Allan & Jan’s new cowshed – almost finished

A few months back  I went out to get some photos of Allan & Jan’s new cowshed (my Brother & Sister-in Law) being made and seeing the changes is exciting and I always love getting back to the farm.  It is especially exciting at the moment for me because all the cows are calving and the most beautiful little calves are born with their big brown eyes and long eyelashes.

Photos of these little darlings will be in my blog in the next couple of days as I am going to the farm tomorrow to see these little angels and see if I can help Allan feed them which is always fun for me. However just another job for Allan at a hectic time of the year getting very little sleep.

The cowshed is built to milk 40 cows each side of a herringbone shed with automatic cup removers, automatic gates which separate the milkers from the colostrum milking cows (which have just calved) by a computer which Allan inputs their number in before the gate opens after they are milked.  As the cows walk out of the shed they approach the automated gates leaving the yard.  These gates will also separate any cow Allan wants for AB (artificial breeding) or if a cow is sick and needs extra tending or for any reason at all from the main milking herd as the cows leave the shed for the paddock.

The noise from the milking machine and the automatic cup removers is just so quiet!  Not like Dad’s old cowshed I helped Dad milk in the school holidays – but then us kids wanted the volume on the radio loud, listening to our favorite radio station (only possible when we washed the cups and yard down when milking was finished).  Allan’s new cowshed sparkles with shiny new cups and machinery, an awesome feedpad and a fully computerised cowshed in a nutshell with the latest and greatest machinery.

I am looking forward to seeing it with almost half the herd in milking at almost full capacity tomorrow and pat some tame cows that love their heads scratched – it will be so much fun!
